April 3, 2019 - The Last Hurrah! Ely, NV

Image
Up early this morning in anticipation of a short drive to Ely, NV where we are now docked at a KOA.  Big bucks but we need to dump before we get home.  Tried to make a phone call to wish my Dad a happy birthday but this was in my way: Not much out here but beauty! We were able to arrive just around lunchtime and check into camp.  After a quick lunch, we took off to visit the last Nevada State Park on our agenda - Cave Lake .  Another beautiful drive up another beautiful canyon.  The Park is located at about 7700 feet so there is still snow there and 1/2 of the campground is closed.  We did see one brave camper.  Besides beautiful surroundings there is a small lake/reservoir which right now, is still covered with ice and snow. Even Ceilidh had a chance to stretch her legs and revel in the snow that she loves so much.   We fueled the truck (diesel 3.07 in Ely) and plan to eat dinner out this evening.  This time tomorrow, God willing we will be home in Reno

Happy Birthday Stanley - I love you Daddy!!! Stanley Kramer  Born April 3, 1920 Here's to the best Dad ever.  He gave us everything!  He gave the automotive industry tons too!  Worked for GM for 40 years and put all of us through college.  The most important thing he gave us besides love was a work ethic which all of us (7 children) have passed down to their children.  He should and I am sure is so proud of the family he made.  Thank you Daddy and I hope you have a wonderful Birthday!! This morning we got up to cloudy skies and my promise for a hike looked bad BUT the temperature was fine and we all know that a run is better when the sun is hidden soooooo I hit the road for 3 miles at 5500'   Not too bad.  Now I feel like I can cruise through the day. While I was out for the run Russ was home cleaning up Ceilidh's puke.  Apparently she ate some dead thing in the campground and was feeling a bit under the weather -- still is.  This is a good reason for keepin

April Fools. We are still here!!

We left our comfortable campsite at Kershaw-Ryan State Park and headed out to Echo Canyon State Park --yes we decided to brave the cold temps and make this our home base for the next 2 days.  This park is located on the banks of a reservoir.  For those of us who are used to reservoirs the size of Stampede, Boca or even Prosser, this place is more like a pond.  But the lack of population makes it wonderful.  We backed our trailer into a campsite.  We are the only rig in this place.  Kinda nice, no leash on Ceilidh.  She loves it too. After parking our home, we took a drive down to the next State Park:  Spring Valley State Park.  This area was settled by the Mormons in 1865.  I can see why Brigham Young decided that they should put down roots here.  Some really fertile farmlands in the midst of all of this geologic jumble. At one point we found a little sign that said "Echo Point". We stopped, figuring that it was the namesake for this place that because

March 31, 2019 – a tale of 3 parks – or why we as humans are bound to convenience

So I got up early this morning and did 3 miles on the entry road.   It seemed straight and relatively level and in fact it was.   The only problem was that I hadn’t reckoned with the fact that it ran up a canyon – thus no sun! Brrrr.   After a quick breakfast of Russ’ fine oatmeal, we set out for the object for today, as I stated yesterday – find the next place to call home.    Me and My Co-co-pilot The first spot Beaver Dam State Park could only be reached either by helicopter or 28 miles of dirt and sometimes very scary road.   We got there and not by helicopter.   Talk about desolate and primitive.   There was not a soul there – tons of campsites but really none suitable for a trailer.   Campsite at Beaver Dam State P We did take a walk however and got some great pictures some of which look down into the canyon.   Again, gorgeous colors and some interesting flora.   View down into the Canyon - Amazing colors View into the

March 30, 2019 – Back in the no-zone

Yes, we are out of civilization now and back in the no cell service zone.   Here is the reason.   Pretty nice, huh? After 2 days at Nellis AFB cleaning up, getting the oil changed, doing laundry and shopping we were ready to hit the road again.   We have been to many military installations with our traveling home and each one has its own personality.   This diversity is well reflected when you go into the base exchange and look at the items for sale in the   women’s department.   What can I say:   VEGAS BABY!   There was literally nothing there that a typical Reno/Tahoe/Truckee would purchase.   What would I do with a Ives St. Laurent or Coach bag? Our destination on Friday was Kershaw-Ryan Nevada State Park.   We arrived here not knowing what to expect and were surprised to find a really nice little campground that had many openings.   There are no services here in the campsites (electric, water) and certainly no cell service (read canyon), but the par
