Oh What a Nasty Day - February 19, 2018

Wind started blowing again early this morning at the Organ Pipe Cactus Park.

One story I have to tell for which I have no pictures and it is only relayed second hand:  Russ walked by one of the tent campsites where it was obvious that the campers were German -- their flag, etc.  The campers were not there, must have been out exploring one of the hikes.  The funny thing was that there, perched on their styrofoam cooler were 2 ravens just going to town on the contents.  I wonder what they had for dinner this evening.

We had decided to press onto BLM dry camping a bit north at the Petroglyph site:  Painted Rock.  Our plan had been to drive to Gila Bend, gas up, have lunch, stock up on groceries and set up camp by mid afternoon.

The gas up proved to be quite challenging as everyone in the world was doing the same thing and when you have a truck with a trailer and you have to have diesel, you are kinda at the other folks mercy -- or you just have to be a jerk.  Note to self, NEVER travel on the 3rd day of a 3-day weekend.

Well, little did we know that there is only one place in Gila Bend that is not Mexican food or fast food.  The name of this place is "Space Age Restaurant"  and I can say that this place was "out of this world," and NOT in a good way.  I am not that picky but the potato soup turned out to be mushroom (didn't see any) and I swear it was like drinking tasteless gravy.  Get the picture?  I felt sorry for the employees.  It was obvious that they were way understaffed.

The next task, groceries, proved to be equally challenging.  There was no grocery store within one hour of this town other than a Carneceria which is where we ended up getting  some meager provisions.  Turned out the ribs were totally awesome.

We headed out into the desert to find our camping spot and our trailer felt like a sailboat.  The wind was so bad, the dust was blowing so hard that after setting up camp we holed up for the rest of the day inside.  The campsite is primitive.  They do have garbage here and it is only $4 per night for us seniors.

It is 9:10pm and the wind has died down, the stars are out, the moon is beautiful.  Wish I could show you pictures of it but all I have is this picture of my dog on her last night run. (she has a little night light so I can keep track of her).

Tomorrow is supposed to be clear and cool.  We will go look at the Petroglyphs and hang out!
