Rainy as predicted - Valentine's Day/Ash Wednesday 2-14-18

Woke up this day with splatters on the roof.  Rain.  Just like the forecasters said.  I thought Mexico was supposed to be warm and sunny?  I am wearing jeans, wool socks and a patagonia fleece shirt.  Awe well.  I hope that someone is benefiting from this precipitation.

Grey Day

We hung around the trailer til 11:30am and then ventured out for a trip to the local Catholic Church.  The Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Pat and I wanted to get our Ash Wednesday ashes and so the guys dropped us off.

You can see that the little church was beautiful.  It struck me though that all the help in the church, the readers even the crew setting up the loud speaker (don't really know why they needed it -- place was so small) were women.  I just don't get why the Catholic Church can't allow women to become priests.  But I digress.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church

Pat and I both thought that the service would be quick -- we didn't think there was a mass related with this ceremony but the whole thing started out looking like one.  There were readings and even a sermon.  During the sermon, which neither of us understood, the priest indicated something about doing something to the top of his head.  Well, when we got the ashes, sure enough, he did not place them on our foreheads (which we were accustomed to) rather they were rubbed into the top of our heads.

One other interesting and perhaps cultural event occurred prior to the ceremony.  Just after I shot the picture of the interior of the church, a middle aged woman got down on her knees and shuffled up the aisle to the altar.  Must have been a penance?  There was a priest in the back of the church doing confessions.

After the ashes, we made it back to the Tekila Bar where Omar took our order and we had a great lunch -- including a margarita for $14 each.  Nice view of the Malecon and it also had a "recycle room."  Can you guess what that is???

Back to the trailer to rest up for a fish fry that Russ is putting on tonight.  Tomorrow is supposed to be cloudy but no rain.
