Day 3, Chuck's Birthday. March 7, 2019
Good thing I messed up and wished Chuck a Happy Birthday
yesterday – today would have been impossible for lack of cell service. Speaking of that, so far so good! I have been actually reading a book, although
it is on a kindle. Pretty good too “1942: The Year That Tried Men's Souls”
until you get hung up on the US military officers and the Japanese names. Working my way through it though. Makes me realize how little I actually know
about the second world war.
We were up at a decent hour this morning to a beautiful blue
sky!! Yay, finally found the sun. Before
breakfast I made a 3 mile trot down and up the road beyond our campsite. Didn’t realize it but it turned into gravel about 1/8 mile in so I was real careful not to trip on the rocks.
After breakfast we took off for our tour of the park. All were geologic beauties. We
visited “The mouse tank,” supposedly named after the Piaute fugitive named "Little Mouse" who holed up in these parts, surviving on the water left in rock
pools after a rain. Along the way, we
saw many petroglyphs that were just amazing.
We also took a hike down a slot canyon called the White
Domes. This trail was a bit difficult –
lots of elevation and rocks. We remarked
that it would never pass muster in Yosemite – there would have to be handrails
installed and, frankly, that would bankrupt the park.
Along the way, in addition to the many views we marveled at,
we saw several herds of big horn sheep.
Before cocktail hour I took Ceilidh out for a walk and in
the wilderness she was able to chase a jack rabbit. Lucky for us, the Nevada State Park system, allows dogs on the
trials as long as they are on a leash.
Dinner tonight is bar-b-que chicken and potatoes. Tomorrow we finish the park – got a plan laid
on.
Oh yes, I almost forgot: Happy Real Birthday Chuck!
