Sunday in the Hood! 3/11/18
Up early to go to church at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in San Felipe (imagine that name). Pat and I walked the 1.5 miles to the church. We followed instructions from google but somehow managed to get lost -- I mean, not really lost but twisted around. The actual distance should have been 1 mile but you know how that goes. The 8:30 am mass was in English, well sort of. Neither Pat nor I got the gist of the sermon -- as the poor priest read it in stilted English from a typewritten paper. Maybe it just didn't translate well. I'm also thinking that I should donate a microphone holder to the guy. He really needed 3 hands at times and had to rely on the two women altar servers.
Following mass Steve and Russ picked us up and we headed out for breakfast at the Roadrunner Cafe just a bit north of our camp. We had the special which is eggs benedict. Next up was a walk back along the Malecon where the Mexican tourists were beginning to pack up their tents, children and coolers for the return to their homes.
The rest of the day was spent basically doing nothing. Which is what we do in the hood on a Sunday in Mexico. Until we went to a dinner at one of the fellow camper's home where we and about 12 other people had a wonderful dinner and too much alcohol (one of the side effects of communal dinners around here).
An interesting phenomenon occurs in this camp. There are 2 couples that live here all year round and quite a few others that come down every so often during the good weather. When these parties intersect, they MUST have a party. And, EVERYONE has to be invited -- we wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. The fact of the matter is that this cycle becomes onerous, I believe, to everyone. Unfortunately there really is no way out of this circle of dinner and wine. Everyone has to take a turn and then it starts all over. If someone were to bring up the idea to change the situation by decreasing the frequency of the group dinners, he/she would be sure to hurt someone's feelings.
Sometimes being social is such a pain.
Here is a really cool picture that Tina Gaal painted and is giving to me to take home to Reno. Notice the little nuance in the ribbon in the girl's hair.
Sunrise this morning was interesting and it forebode a pleasant day weather wise. Which it was!
