Reunion pre-run. August 3, 2017, day 43


Couldn’t get to this yesterday things got real busy!!  Please excuse my tardiness for the next few days since I will be partying with my family.

Started out with a bang yesterday.  Russ and I went to Harsen’s Island for breakfast.  We took the Champion Ferry across the St. Clair River and drove to the south side of the island where all of us used to hang out when we were kids.  We stopped at the Sans Souci Bar and Grill for breakfast and I toasted the first day of my family reunion with a bloody mary.  Back to the mainland and onto scouting out or venue for the Saturday picnic – St. Clair Metro Park.  Just our luck, the beach is closed because of a sewer spill.  I made this reservation back in April and that’s what I get for planning.  Oh well, there is a pool.  When I asked the pool attendants if they would waive the $5 fee because we couldn’t swim in the lake, they said no, of course.  That’s a government based business for you.  Don’t make any exceptions.  Maybe if they did, they would have more people paying the $10 to get into the park. 

In any event the scout trip was good, we got  the lay of the land and what we will need. 

Afterwards, we drove to the hotel where many of our out of town relatives are staying.  From there things got kind of blurry, if you know what I mean. 

Here’s a couple of highlights:

1. Chuck, coming from California, was to spend the first night in our trailer with us.  His flight was scheduled to get in at 3pm which would give him time to get to the Twisted Rooster and have dinner with us.  Well, he decided to take a “bump” for a $600 voucher.  That would also have been fine for the next flight would arrive at 8:30pm – but, the next flight was cancelled!!!  I got a text from him this morning at 5:21 am – “getting the car now.”  Suffice it to say, he got no sleep.  So he is sleeping in the back of the trailer as I write this now.  Don’t know if he knows it but he talks in his sleep.

2.On the way home from the restaurant, we found out we have another flat tire.  Russ is out and about right now finding a place to fix it.

The sky is grey, it rained cats and dogs last night so EVERYTHING in this trailer is damp and/or soggy.  Sure hope things clear up a bit but it is not sounding good.  Here comes the damn rain again.

Jeez, the morning was fine.  Russ made it back to Buffalo and got the tire fixed.  That was the good news.  We departed the Tie Hack campground at 9:30am and made good time traveling west through the Bighorn Mountains with the final destination being Cody, WY. The drive was beautiful as promised by the notations on the map.  We crossed the Powder River Pass (elevation 9,666) and headed down the TenSleep Canyon.  Here we were treated to truly spectacular views.  Deep gorges and massive rock wall formations.  Also involved in this little journey was a road repair job that necessitated all of us being lead by a "pilot car."  Actually all they were doing was a slurry seal that involved gravel on the bottom and some black substance sprayed over it.  Well by the time we got through that road construction and stopped for a pee break, this is what had happened to the front window of our brand new lance trailer: 😢 So, we spent the rest of the ...

Evening in Breckenridge Day 5, 6/24/17

Friday, 6/24/17, Breckenridge, Colorado. On a warm afternoon cooling into an alpine evening with hints of approaching chill the main street is alive with colorful clots of moving people.  Breckenridge, a mining and timber town begun in the 1980's  lives now in it's identity as a mountain destination resort with activities for all ages, the perfect place to wear that new Patagonia jacket.  The old buildings have put on new faces and the new buildings are faced with weathered barn-wood to create a Swiss Alps/old mountain mining town/New Age Ski Town atmosphere.   The walkers and shoppers, in groups, pairs and singles roam freely on the the sidewalks and into the street,  Vehicle traffic crawls, for the pedestrian is king and need take no heed of intersections or signals.  We did manage to find parking and had a lovely dinner with friends at the Quandary Grille.  During the hours we spent at the restaurant, the town went to bed and we drove back to our ...

Warren AFB

6/27/17  Cheyenne, Wyoming We're spending the night at Warren Air Force Base on the outskirts of Cheyenne.  Because I'm retired military, we can use the RV facilities that most bases have.  It's a pretty good deal; for 15-20 bucks you get power, water, sewer connections and a gated community with an armed guard. Life is subtly different on a military base.  Time is measured by bugle calls that can catch you by surprise.  The Post Commander determines the schedule, so it can differ a little from base to base. At the sound of "To the Colors" everyone on base stops whatever they are doing and turns toward the music.  It's like when you were 10 and somebody yelled "freeze".  It is a moment of oneness when everybody is doing the same thing, privates and generals, bound by ritual and ceremony.
