She Never Gives up Her Dead, Day 55, August 15, 2017

When the gales of November come early.  Those of you in my generation, and especially those from Michigan will remember these words.  I can totally imagine it here at Lake Superior today.  The wind was blowing and the waves were crashing.  This place may be a beautiful beach but probably only for a 2 week period in the middle of June.   Here she is:

Lake Superior - Looks Mean huh?

We visited the  Upper Tahquamenon falls this morning before the rest of the campers had eaten breakfast.  That means we pretty much had it to ourselves.  Such a beautiful phenomenon -- the color is actually, as my brother Mark told me, due to the tanins in the water caused by all of the decaying vegetation (leaves and trees) that are in the watershed.  The amount of water that flows over this falls is 54,000 gallons per minute.  Lots of water, huh?  Well check out these photos:

Finished, we went back to the trailer had breakfast and prepared to head out.  There was a bit of a delay as the folk across from us were also trying to depart and they were having a heck of a time hooking up.  After 20 minutes, they were taking a break so I asked if we could get on our way.  I could tell they were frustrated.  The kids were sitting quietly on the picnic table, just waiting for Mom and Dad to get it together.  I hope they finally were successful.

Out of there, we headed over to Muninsing, MI.  We did not have reservations and we were hoping to find a nice quiet campground with very few people in it.  The first place we tried had the sign "Campground Full" so we were beginning to get nervous about having to take an expensive park.  We drove up to Autrain park which is in the Hiawatha National Forest.  This is one of the campgrounds we had found on our Allstays phone application.  We had to take a few lefts and rights but we located the campground (USFS) on the Autrain Lake and there were plenty of vacancies.  We are dry camping (no power, sewer or water) which is really what we like best.  No neighbors just us and mother nature.  The price is so right too $9.00 per night (USFS Sr. pass).

Super quiet, super private campsite -- lake Autrain outside our back window

Went to Muninsing which is past Autrain and Christmas (yep) to scout out a laundromat and to pick up a few grocery items.

Tomorrow we will go do laundry and we have tickets to take the Painted Rock Boat Tour at 6pm. Can't wait.  This is another thing I missed while I was in college.
