A visit to the Library and the Cemetery Day 22, July 10, 2017 –

Yep. That about describes our day today.  Russ and I were so intent on making a connection on the wireless that we went into Deadwood and hid out at the public library for a couple of hours.  We had bills to pay, blogs & pictures to upload.  The library had free wifi BUT, I gotta say it was really sloooooow.  I mean beggars can’t be choosers, right?  But the fact is that my cell data service with 2 bars was faster from there than their wifi.  Nevertheless, we struggled on and got a couple of blogs uploaded and a couple of bills paid. 

After our library sojourn, we headed off for Kevin Costner’s Deadwood Tour.  $10 for seniors and what a show our bus driver put on.  First of all we loaded onto an ancient school bus that seemed ridiculously unsafe.  No windows, no seatbelts and just generally worn down.  The driver was quite an actor and regaled us with tales of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane, all while maneuvering his bus up a really steep hill and into the cemetery where we were able to disembark and view the graves of the two aforementioned western characters.  It was a fun trip and well worth the fare.  By the way, for those of you who didn’t know (like me) Wild Bill was killed here in Deadwood while he was playing a poker game at 4 in the afternoon.  He was shot in the back of the head and the hand he was holding at the time was two aces and two eights.  Henceforth this hand is call “the dead man’s hand.”  Hummmm, useful information?


On back to our campground to get the puppy exercised.  Dinner was leftovers.  Hotdogs with beans, mac and cheese and cole slaw.  Mmmmm good!!  BTW, it is now 8:45 pm and or neighbors have yet to return to their trailer where they left their little fuzzy doggie about 12 hours ago.  Yes, the AC has been on constantly and we are hoping that the dog has enough room to do his/her business in there.  

 As a follow up, the puppy is fine -- barking away the next morning but the total amount of time he/she spent in that trailer, by itself, with the a/c on was 15 hours.  Just Sayin.

Jeez, the morning was fine.  Russ made it back to Buffalo and got the tire fixed.  That was the good news.  We departed the Tie Hack campground at 9:30am and made good time traveling west through the Bighorn Mountains with the final destination being Cody, WY. The drive was beautiful as promised by the notations on the map.  We crossed the Powder River Pass (elevation 9,666) and headed down the TenSleep Canyon.  Here we were treated to truly spectacular views.  Deep gorges and massive rock wall formations.  Also involved in this little journey was a road repair job that necessitated all of us being lead by a "pilot car."  Actually all they were doing was a slurry seal that involved gravel on the bottom and some black substance sprayed over it.  Well by the time we got through that road construction and stopped for a pee break, this is what had happened to the front window of our brand new lance trailer: 😢 So, we spent the rest of the ...

Evening in Breckenridge Day 5, 6/24/17

Friday, 6/24/17, Breckenridge, Colorado. On a warm afternoon cooling into an alpine evening with hints of approaching chill the main street is alive with colorful clots of moving people.  Breckenridge, a mining and timber town begun in the 1980's  lives now in it's identity as a mountain destination resort with activities for all ages, the perfect place to wear that new Patagonia jacket.  The old buildings have put on new faces and the new buildings are faced with weathered barn-wood to create a Swiss Alps/old mountain mining town/New Age Ski Town atmosphere.   The walkers and shoppers, in groups, pairs and singles roam freely on the the sidewalks and into the street,  Vehicle traffic crawls, for the pedestrian is king and need take no heed of intersections or signals.  We did manage to find parking and had a lovely dinner with friends at the Quandary Grille.  During the hours we spent at the restaurant, the town went to bed and we drove back to our ...

Warren AFB

6/27/17  Cheyenne, Wyoming We're spending the night at Warren Air Force Base on the outskirts of Cheyenne.  Because I'm retired military, we can use the RV facilities that most bases have.  It's a pretty good deal; for 15-20 bucks you get power, water, sewer connections and a gated community with an armed guard. Life is subtly different on a military base.  Time is measured by bugle calls that can catch you by surprise.  The Post Commander determines the schedule, so it can differ a little from base to base. At the sound of "To the Colors" everyone on base stops whatever they are doing and turns toward the music.  It's like when you were 10 and somebody yelled "freeze".  It is a moment of oneness when everybody is doing the same thing, privates and generals, bound by ritual and ceremony.
