Hot in the Heartland - Sacajawea - Day 26, July 15, 2017

Boy and is it HOT here.  I know, it is hot where you are too and you probably don't need to be reminded.  Okay.  Enough.  This morning I got in a 3 mile run before the place heated up.  Unfortunately the teeny, biting flies were on my route.  Had to hurry along, walking would have been the same thing.  They love sweat!

Today was a drive day.  250 miles from the east side of South Dakota to east central.  Along the way we did get to see a couple of great sights.  We hit the edge of the Badlands National Park -- enough to brag that we were there.  I can only imagine what the pioneers thought when they got to this place.  How the heck did they get through it.

From this place, we headed across South Dakota on Highway 90 (just like 80 only further north).  Uneventful and basically FLAT.  Crossing the Missouri River. We stopped at a rest stop just east of Chamberlain, SD where we were treated to the most historical exhibit I have ever seen at a rest stop.  This one was dedicated to Lewis and Clark -- explorers that opened up the west.  They left St. Louis trying to find a way to the west coast and boy where they surprised at what they did find!!  The USA!!  What an expedition.  Here is a picture of the Missouri taken from the rest stop overlook.

Another treat afforded us in that rest stop was the beautiful statue of Sacajawea, the Shoshone Indian guide and translator who was in the Lewis and Clark expedition.  This statue was about 50 feet high and could also be seen from the freeway (Hwy 90).  I was created and installed only last year (2016) by artist Dale Lamphere.  Here is some more information on that.

Couple of pictures -- she's a beauty!

This is what you see from the freeway

Pretty nice little drink I made for myself after a long day (and I drove most of it)!  check it out!
