Taliesin and more rain. Day 36, July 26, 2017
Slept in this morning -- it is amazing how difficult it is to tell the time of day when the sky is overcast. After breakfast we headed out for Spring Green, WI, the home of Frank Loyd Wright's famous home "Taliesin." When we arrived at the "visitor center," we realized that in order to actually see the house, you had to purchase a tour. Well, I had come all this way and I was pretty certain that I would not get back to Spring Green again in my lifetime, so we forked up the $48 each (senior price) for tickets to the house tour. In the end, I was glad I did.
The tour was lead by a women named Judy who really did seem to know her stuff. She explained that Mr. Wright's idea was to incorporate the outside into the house. I had read about this place in "The Women" and wanted to see the interior. I was somewhat surprised at the size of the home. I expected it to be much more expansive but it was really a delight to see. Judy said that Mr. Wright designed his spaces so that the entries were lower than the rooms because he wanted to cause an air of relief when one entered. I got it. You have to experience it to understand.
The entire estate was carefully planned by Mr. Wright, including all of the landscaping and several other residences on the property. The weather has taken its toll on this property -- and while lots of money is being spent to restore it to its original "healthy" status, it will be an unending task. In any event, I was really glad I spent the money and took the tour.
While we were waiting for the tour we headed off into Spring Green Village and found the library where we were able to access the internet and get some of our bills paid and my posts uploaded. I hope you were able to enjoy them.
Tomorrow, we continue our journey to the east side of the Wisconsin. Hope to be somewhere near cell service. I swear these last two states must be hold outs for Verizon. Wonder what carrier all of those cell towers are pointed at?
