Lots of Rolling Hills, Day 21, July 9, 2017
We left camp this morning at 8:02am and went directly to the
free dump. Wow, what a pleasure. There were 5 stations, each had free dump and
free fresh water. Donations only! All set and off we went for Deadwood,
SD. We had booked a site through
Passport America which advertises 50% off.
Planning to stay here 3 nights but one of the nights we wanted is a “holiday”
(somebody’s jamboree) so that date did not qualify for the discount.
The ride here was pretty boring and hot (99 degrees outside)
until we decided to take the side trip to Devil’s Tower. The road took us up close enough so we didn’t
have to actually go into the monument but got some pictures and thanks to the
internet, got a bit of geological and Indian history. Apparently, Indian legend has it that a
couple of Indian girls were out playing when they were approached by a
bear. They got scared and climbed up on
a rock and prayed to god that he would save them. When they opened their eyes they realized
that the rock had risen way high (876 feet actually) and the bear, although he
tried (witness the interesting claw like formations on the side of the monument)
could not reach them. The legend did not
explain how the girls got down from the rock after the bear left, however.
After that side trip, we made our way to Deadwood which is a
real tourist trap and from first glance it reminds us of something between
Virginia City and Truckee only with mega casinos thrown in. We will probably check Deadwood out tomorrow.
So sorry to say it has been impossible to get a reliable
internet connection for about a week.
This park – Hidden Valley RV Park, while it advertises WIFI has no connection
at all and there is no cell service. We
will go into Deadwood tomorrow and to the library and attempt to get all of
this uploaded.
Tonight we are going out to dinner Cousins Pizza was
recommended to us by our neighbors in the last campground – Katie and Joe.
Finally getting this day uploaded today, July 12, 2017. This campground has awesome internet and an awesome cell service. Unfortunately their well pump broke yesterday so they have no water. Oh well. That's the breaks!
