On the Road Again, Day 17, July 5, 2017 Red Lodge, MT



Up at the crack of dawn to beat the heat on into Billings to see about our trailer glass problem.  We found the safelite glass dealer on Main Street and he immediately crash-wrapped the window and said not to worry, there would be no safety issue now that there are 2 layers of adhesive over the shattered glass.  Russ and I had already decided to try to not focus on the broken glass any longer and return to our plan to cross the country.

While there, I asked Kelly McKenzie, the Manager at Safelite, to confirm to the insurance company AAA that the glass that we needed was not something that Safelite could provide and that we would have to have an RV dealer install it.  This he was supposed to be able to do by making a phone call to AAA (or specifically RV Solutions of Safelite which is the approved dealer for AAA).  Well 2.5 hours later, Kelly finally gave up, saying that he had left messages EVERYWHERE and he would get back to us as soon as they responded to him.  He was as frustrated as we have been over the past 6 days. 

This guy went above and beyond, I’ll tell you.  Talk about picking up the gauntlet.  He was not going to give up and was very disappointed in “his company (Safelite).”  This is a guy who is as TENACIOUS as I am.  Assured by Kelly that the trailer was safe to tow, we departed the business a bit after noon and headed up to the  Gallatin-Custer National Forest to escape the now 95 degree heat. 

We settled on USFS a campground at 7300 feet elevation. Again, the fee is $8.50 per might – dry camping.   Here the heat was a mere 85 degrees when we arrived around 3 pm.  Now I sit, 6:01 pm, in the midst of a beautiful thundershower, typing this with a glass of wine at my side.  Boy, I do miss these things.  Ceilidh is not happy, this makes her most nervous.


Oh, did I mention that I got a call from General Motors who is finally responding to my complaint from the beginning of April 2017 regarding what I consider to be a flaw in the paint job on our 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?  Miracles do happen, don’t they?  I am expecting smooth sailing from here on out. (hahaha).  Think we will have hot dogs tonight and go check out Yellowstone sans trailer tomorrow.

Jeez, the morning was fine.  Russ made it back to Buffalo and got the tire fixed.  That was the good news.  We departed the Tie Hack campground at 9:30am and made good time traveling west through the Bighorn Mountains with the final destination being Cody, WY. The drive was beautiful as promised by the notations on the map.  We crossed the Powder River Pass (elevation 9,666) and headed down the TenSleep Canyon.  Here we were treated to truly spectacular views.  Deep gorges and massive rock wall formations.  Also involved in this little journey was a road repair job that necessitated all of us being lead by a "pilot car."  Actually all they were doing was a slurry seal that involved gravel on the bottom and some black substance sprayed over it.  Well by the time we got through that road construction and stopped for a pee break, this is what had happened to the front window of our brand new lance trailer: 😢 So, we spent the rest of the ...

Evening in Breckenridge Day 5, 6/24/17

Friday, 6/24/17, Breckenridge, Colorado. On a warm afternoon cooling into an alpine evening with hints of approaching chill the main street is alive with colorful clots of moving people.  Breckenridge, a mining and timber town begun in the 1980's  lives now in it's identity as a mountain destination resort with activities for all ages, the perfect place to wear that new Patagonia jacket.  The old buildings have put on new faces and the new buildings are faced with weathered barn-wood to create a Swiss Alps/old mountain mining town/New Age Ski Town atmosphere.   The walkers and shoppers, in groups, pairs and singles roam freely on the the sidewalks and into the street,  Vehicle traffic crawls, for the pedestrian is king and need take no heed of intersections or signals.  We did manage to find parking and had a lovely dinner with friends at the Quandary Grille.  During the hours we spent at the restaurant, the town went to bed and we drove back to our ...

Warren AFB

6/27/17  Cheyenne, Wyoming We're spending the night at Warren Air Force Base on the outskirts of Cheyenne.  Because I'm retired military, we can use the RV facilities that most bases have.  It's a pretty good deal; for 15-20 bucks you get power, water, sewer connections and a gated community with an armed guard. Life is subtly different on a military base.  Time is measured by bugle calls that can catch you by surprise.  The Post Commander determines the schedule, so it can differ a little from base to base. At the sound of "To the Colors" everyone on base stops whatever they are doing and turns toward the music.  It's like when you were 10 and somebody yelled "freeze".  It is a moment of oneness when everybody is doing the same thing, privates and generals, bound by ritual and ceremony.
