Cheese Curds, the river and an evening march, Day 34, July 24, 2017

Began this morning with a nice run of 5 miles.  The weather was perfect.  The wild flowers along the way were precious and petite -- daisies fine and small not huge like the ones we have in Reno and Truckee.  Along my run I noticed a small "fruit stand" which was not quite set up for the day but it was one of those "honor system" stands.  They are all over the place here.  Fruit, vegetables and firewood for sale -- no one manning the booth -- just a box to put your money in.  Kinda cool, don't you think?

We left our little bar/campground and headed over to the Scenic Byway along the Mississippi River.  But of course, we had to have lunch in one of these Sports Bar/Grills.  We had encountered a motorcycle driving couple back in Montana who were from Wisconsin.  When asked what we should see in their state, they said have lunch at the "Chef Shack" and drive the Scenic Byway.  Well, it was Monday so said "Chef Shack" was closed.  Had to do the next best thing "Mike's Bay Town Bar and Grill."  Turned out to be a winner.  Russ had the Patty Melt on rye, me the b-b-que chicken wrap and we shared an order of CHEESE CURDS.  Well, I was skeptical but turns out, these things are awesome.  If you get a chance sometime -- try them but make sure they are homemade, not some frozen packaged stuff.

The drive was beautiful.  We saw where some Indian girl threw herself off a cliff because her family wouldn't let her marry the guy she wanted but made her marry someone else -- Maiden Rock.  Same old Romeo and Juliet stuff, I say.  Classic.

We were thinking of camping at a WI state park and probably would have except the price.  A campsite with no power or water would have cost us $31 (this includes the $11 out of state -- no Senior discount - park entry fee.  We thought this was too steep for our budget so we moved along.  In the end we found the Sleep Hollow Campground which is privately owned.  It is actually situated on 500 acres of this fellow's farm land.  Cost for electric and water $31 (including tax).  Still a little steep for my taste but we liked the site so we parked.

I met one of the seasonal residents of the park -- Jody -- who struck me as someone who I could pal around with and when she mentioned she would be going for a walk later that evening, I said: " Can I come too?"  So we met at 7:30 and walked about 5 miles up and down hills, working up a sweat (don't forget this is humidity central).  She had lots to talk about.  She and her husband have just retired and sold their home.  They bought this big trailer that is sitting on a pier foundation in this park and will stay here til October, then go home across the state in WI to their apartment.  Her ultimate goal is to get to Texas on the East Coast (the Padre Islands).  Don't think she has ever been there but has this dream.  Made me think of that as a possible winter destination, maybe?

Anyways, here are a couple of pictures from today!  Tomorrow we press on towards the eastern side of Wisconsin.

Place where aforementioned tragedy occurred.

Cheese Curds -- mmmm-good
